CLEAR Airport Guide: John F. Kennedy International Airport

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is New York City's primary international airport and one of the busiest airports in the United States.

From iconic New York dining and shopping to traveler recommendations and airport tips, here's everything you need to know to enjoy a great travel day at JFK.

Why Fly Through JFK?

JFK connects travelers to destinations across North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, and the Middle East. While the New York metropolitan area is also served by LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), JFK offers the region's largest selection of international flights and nonstop destinations. Its six terminals serve dozens of domestic and international airlines, and the AirTrain makes it easy to travel between terminals, parking, and rail connections.

Did You Know? JFK is home to the world's longest nonstop commercial flight, connecting New York and Singapore in nearly 19 hours.

Experience New York City at JFK

Flying through JFK offers a chance to experience the best of New York without having to leave the airport. From iconic restaurants and legendary city brands to aviation history and unforgettable views, there's plenty to explore before your flight.

The recommendations here cover local favorites with picks from our CLEAR Ambassadors, helping you experience some of New York City's most iconic food, brands, and attractions.

Where to Eat at JFK

Whether you're looking for a quick bite or a leisurely meal before boarding, our CLEAR Ambassadors recommend several restaurants that bring a taste of New York City to JFK. In Terminal 4, enjoy a steakhouse meal at The Palm Bar & Grille, a New York dining institution known for its steaks, seafood, and classic American fare. Experience a taste of the East Village at Boulton & Watt, a neighborhood gastropub known for elevated comfort food, craft beer, and cocktails, or explore Five Borough Food Hall, a New York-inspired food hall featuring local and global flavors that reflect the city's diversity. You'll also find Shake Shack, the Madison Square Park favorite that has become one of the city's most recognizable brands, in Terminals 4, 5, and 8.

Where to Shop at JFK

New York's influence extends throughout JFK, with several hometown brands bringing a piece of the city into the airport. Pick up skincare and travel essentials from Kiehl's, the New York apothecary that's been serving customers since 1851.

If you're traveling through Terminal 8, you'll find two concepts that bring New York neighborhoods into the terminal. BKLYN Shopping Duty Free takes inspiration from Brooklyn's classic brownstones and the Brooklyn Bridge, while W. 12th St. Market channels the character of Manhattan's Meatpacking District with gifts, food, and travel finds.

Make the Most of Your Time at JFK

JFK captures the iconic city energy New York is known for. Whether you have an hour before boarding or several hours between flights, the airport offers plenty of ways to experience the city without venturing too far from your gate. From aviation history and skyline views to easy access into Manhattan, there are plenty of opportunities to make the most of your time.

Before You Board

If you have extra time before your flight, Terminal 5 is home to some of JFK's most memorable experiences. Visit the iconic TWA Hotel to explore its restored mid-century architecture and aviation exhibits, a reminder of the Jet Age when New York helped define modern air travel. Step aboard the Connie Cocktail Lounge, a restored 1958 Lockheed Constellation transformed into a retro cocktail bar, or relax in the hotel's Sunken Lounge, one of the Flight Center's signature spaces. If you're flying through Terminal 5, don't miss the free JetBlue T5 Rooftop, one of the few post-security outdoor spaces at a New York airport, where you can enjoy fresh air and sweeping views of the airfield.

Extra Time at JFK

Unlike airports with connected concourses, JFK's terminals aren't connected after airport security, so exploring another area may take a little more planning.

If you're already in Terminal 5, spend your extra time exploring its aviation history, architecture, and outdoor spaces. If you're flying from another terminal, take time to explore the restaurants, shops, and amenities closer to your departure gate rather than changing terminals just for sightseeing.

Long Layover

Have several hours between flights? JFK is well connected to Manhattan by the AirTrain, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), and the subway, making it easy to explore Manhattan between flights. Just be sure to leave enough time to return before boarding.

Tight Connection

If you're connecting to another flight, check your departure terminal and gate as soon as you land. Because JFK's terminals aren't connected after airport security, changing terminals requires riding AirTrain and clearing airport security again. If your connection is short, allow as much time as possible.

Enjoy a Seamless Travel Day at JFK

Whether you're departing, arriving, or connecting through John F. Kennedy International Airport, a little planning can make your travel day easier. From accessibility services to airport planning tools, these resources can help you enjoy a great experience.

Plan Ahead With the CLEAR App

Before heading to the airport, download the free CLEAR App to take control of your travel day from home to gate. With the app, know exactly when to leave to get to your gate perfectly on time, based on current traffic, real-time airport conditions, security wait times, and the walk to your gate.

Accessibility at JFK

John F. Kennedy International Airport offers wheelchair assistance, family restrooms, lactation rooms, service animal relief areas, and additional accessibility services throughout the airport. Visit the airport's official JFK Maps & Amenities Guide for the latest accessibility information, and contact your airline before you travel if you need wheelchair assistance or other accessibility accommodations.

JFK participates in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, which helps travelers with non-visible disabilities or conditions, including autism, ADHD, hearing loss, anxiety, chronic illnesses, dementia, and sensory sensitivities, discreetly indicating they may benefit from additional time, patience, or assistance throughout their journey.

Complimentary Sunflower lanyards are available at the Information Centers in the arrivals area of every terminal before airport security. Travelers can also request a lanyard in advance through the airport's accessibility team.

Hearing and Vision Accessibility

JFK offers a variety of accessibility services for travelers who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or have low vision. Free on-demand American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting is available through Convo Now at airport Information Centers, and hearing loops are installed throughout the terminals for passengers who use compatible hearing devices.

Travelers who are blind or have low vision can also use Aira Explorer, a free service that connects them with trained live agents for real-time navigation assistance throughout the airport using their smartphone's camera. Agents can help travelers find their gate, read signs, locate airport amenities, and navigate the terminal with confidence.

Navigate JFK

Know Your Terminal

JFK's terminals operate independently, so it's important to confirm your departure terminal before arriving. Terminal 1 primarily serves international airlines, while Terminal 4 is home to Delta Air Lines and several international carriers. Terminal 5 primarily serves JetBlue, while Terminal 7 serves a mix of domestic and international airlines. Terminal 8 is home to American Airlines, British Airways, Alaska Airlines, and several of their partner airlines. Airline assignments occasionally change, so check the official JFK Airline Directory before your trip.

Getting Between Terminals

The free AirTrain connects every terminal, parking area, Federal Circle, and rail connections throughout JFK.

If you need to change terminals, you'll have to exit the secure area, ride the AirTrain, and go through airport security again, so plan extra time if your itinerary requires a terminal change.

Traveler Tip: Confirm your departure terminal before you head to airport security. Because JFK's terminals aren't connected after airport security, switching terminals requires taking the AirTrain and going through airport security again.

Airport Security

Each terminal has its own airport security checkpoint, and wait times vary throughout the day. You can speed through airport security in seconds with CLEAR+ in Terminal 4.
